Character Name: Rose
Character Canon: Tales ofZestfully Clean Zestiria
History: The sad tale of the most cheerful assassin ever. (Also, Sheepy, this whole app contains spoilers and I know you want to play the game.)
AU History: Rose was born in Caldera. When she was very young, the Combusken Flu swept through the city and claimed the lives of her parents. Rose never knew them (nor was Rose her birth name); however, she was adopted in short order by an officer in the Steel Battalion, who kept her off of the streets. Rose may have been adopted by him, but she was effectively raised by the officer and his entire unit. Their small unit was an elite one named the Windriders, tasked with long-range reconnaissance and fighting battles against Gigans and wild Pokemon alike with little support.
Rose grew up learning to fight. Instead of normal schooling, she learned letters and numbers from the unit's logistics officer; she learned to scavenge and survive in the wilds, and she learned to use knives with stunning skill. She discovered that she was an Earthkin a little before her teenage years; after that, she started training as an Enlightened, too.
Unfortunately, her unit was swept into controversy as she began to reach adulthood. Rose's adoptive father and mentor, the unit's leader, came under question after they failed to protect a Calderan politician and he was captured by bandits. He had to be ransomed back -- and worse, there were rumors that the Gigans had been behind the bandit raid, and that the unit was betrayed. The unit's leader vanished in the confusion.
Some of the soldiers in the Windriders left the Steel Battalion to spare the Calderan military further controversy. They decided to continue investigating -- and when necessary, neutralizing -- enemies to Caldera, as a group called the Scattered Bones. However, their cover story -- bolstered by their missing leader's money and resources, left to them and specifically to Rose -- was that they retired to become a group of traveling merchants called the Spearowfeathers.
The Spearowfeathers weren't much to speak of; their attrition was high after the former leader left, with many of them choosing to remain in the Steel Battalion. They had a couple of wagons and a reason to travel, but few resources. Their most valuable resource was their contacts and information they had, when they were more legitimate members of Calderan society.
Rose was appointed the leader of the group. This was both by virtue of her talents -- she was the only remaining member to be an Earthkin and the previous commander appointed her as the successor -- and the fact that she had a head for trading and being a merchant. Rose had become a very talented logistics officer in her own right. More than that, though, she was a skilled fighter and already proved her worth in battle against the Gigans.
However, she wasn't very experienced. Rose may have been the leader, but she tended to act as the source of inspiration and firepower; a lot of the specifics of managing a small merchant group was left to the non-Enlightened former officers. Nonetheless, they took several jobs from Calderan politicians against the Gigans and otherwise.
After recent events (and despite the cold, which Rose is far from happy with), Rose decided to move the Spearowfeathers' (and thus, the Scattered Bones') base of operations to Union. It seemed like a wise idea in the face of recent events, and the central importance of Union in the situations in Sanctuary and Glacier.
Canon Personality: Rose has two sides to her person, and they can seem at odds at a glance. On the one hand, she is a down-to-earth and friendly merchant girl. She can approach just about anybody -- she thinks nothing of approaching Sorey as he arrives in Ladylake, nor of making good-natured plans to sell more products (like Mabo Curry Buns and a line of clothing for Seraphim). She is a natural at being a good saleswoman.
But, on the other hand, there's the part of her that is the leader of an assassin's guild. Rose can be cold and callous; she can project a fierce (and fearsome) attitude that matches a masked woman perfectly willing to kill. She doesn't seem, when she dons a mask and leather armor, ill-suited to being an assassin.
However, these sides come from similar places. The first is that Rose is quite comfortable with herself; she has a great deal of natural confidence. She tends to operate on gut instincts and impulses. This doesn't, necessarily, make her impulsive; Rose is perfectly willing to do a dogged amount of research to learn what she needs to. However, she trusts her instincts. As a merchant, this means she trusts herself to reach out to the right people -- as she did to Sorey when she first met him -- and have good ideas about what to sell. As an assassin, Rose trusts herself to find out whether those she was hired to kill deserve to die -- and to not kill them, if she thinks they don't. Rose shows in the game, such as when she spares for the former (and fled) Pope, that she will only kill those that she thinks deserve it.
However, Rose still has a hardened side. She doesn't think of herself as an innocent person; she knows that the life she leads, running the Scattered Bones, makes her guilty. She is perfectly willing to kill those who show themselves to be cruel, dangerous, or (literally, given Zestiria's worldbuilding) malevolent without hope of change.
Rose is open with her emotions. She is charismatic and friendly; when she is happy, she shows it by acting bright and cheerful. She can also be sassy and joking -- for example, when Rose doesn't "get" Sorey and Mikleo's obsession with ruins and archaeology. She never feels awkward or tries to fake it, except as a joke ("This must be from the old and dusty era of history!"). Rose doesn't mind sharing her opinion, even if it might grate. She can do it with a smile.
Nor does she mind sharing her opinion on deeper matters. Rose doesn't hesitate to tell people that she will kill someone if she needs to. She does so with a certain nonchalance that can be offputting to her fellow party members; she can almost seem like she doesn't take things seriously. However, this is also a defense mechanism, because it hides things that bother Rose.
Rose doesn't like to admit that is bothered by what she has done. She worries that her hands are too stained with blood because of her history as an assassin. She worries that, as a killer for hire (even one who tried to only kill the deserving), that she is corrupt; she tries to protect Sorey's innocence in part because she feels she lost hers. Rose feels guilt, which often she tries to hide. It's better to tell herself and others that she can handle it, that she isn't affected.
But, she cares deeply about people. She expresses this towards the entire party, especially Sorey and Dezel; she comes to value those friendships a great deal. She also cares greatly for her fellow Sparrowfeathers, openly viewing them as the family that she never knew. This protectiveness can cause her to be hurt, though; after she lost Brad, the original leader, she fears losing those she is closest to. When it happens, Rose can break down -- and she can blame herself, too.
In the end, though, she will keep trying. After Brad (likely) died, Rose ultimately reformed the Windriders as the Scattered Bones. Rose is resilient, even if she needs a push (as Dezel gives her), and can pick back up, then keep going.
AU Deviation: First, the Sparrowfeathers are named the Spearowfeathers. Obviously.
More importantly: the background of the Spearowfeathers/Scattered Bones is a little softened. An assassin's guild is a little too hardcore for Caldera and Brave New World. While Rose has killed Gigans in battle, even in secret missions that the Bones undertook, this isn't why the Scattered Bones exist. They are more of an information gathering group, which will steal, spy on, and occasionally attack people when hired to; they typically do this to make the world a safer place, though they accept money. The majority of their money comes from running a trade caravan as the Spearowfeathers, though.
In addition, the relation between the Spearowfeathers and Caldera is different than the former Windriders and the Rolence Empire. Rose wasn't engaged to a prince at BNW; the group wasn't betrayed by said prince, nor was that prince transformed into a monster. Here, the leader of the Calderan unit vanished; they were politically inconvenient, but they remain loyal to Caldera and working with them through unofficial channels.
Also, Rose doesn't have a Wind Seraphim living inside of her. Dezel's presence in her both increased her power and influenced some of her actions. While I'm open to working something like that out if we get a Dezel, it would likely look very different (and simply may never come up) because the metaphysics are different. This means Rose at BNW wasn't made exceptionally powerful -- and didn't get suble nudges -- from a Seraphim secretly hiding in her head.
Canon Abilities: Rose is a quick fighter who uses paired knives. She is very good at doing lots of rapid-fire attacks, and can get high combo counts with her abilities. She isn't as resilient as her comrades, and she is better with using artes than plain attacks (or, rather, hidden artes over martial artes).
Her hidden artes include a variety of abilities. They include several general kinds. First, Rose can use some that are traps; when enemies move into areas, explosions of energy can send them flying or otherwise inconvenience them. Others will manipulate her position on the battlefield -- for example, send her flying to an enemy or even through them, to attack from behind. Others are direct damage, relying on multiple hits that can throw enemies airborne, and use elemental bursts of energy to strengthen the firepower of her attacks.
Her list of abilities can be found here.
Lastly, Rose can Armatize. This means combining with a Seraphim; the two inhabit her body, and use a magical artifact weapon that is imbued with the Seraph's elemental type. This is incredibly powerful; their stats, including HP, are added together and they can do lots of AOE attacks. They also get unique lists of attacks.
Enlightened Abilities: Rose is a Fighting and Dark type Enlightened. The Fighting represents a lot of her martial artes; Rose is speedy and fast, employing lots of flips, kicks, and sudden strikes with her knives. Dark covers her ability to lay traps, move around enemies (or through them) to get behind them, and the like. With her first evolution, this includes a few Normal-type attacks to always attack first. Rose uses metal knives in her abilities.
Her second evolution improves this. Rose doesn't change much physically; she does, however, leave shadowy afterimages when she moves especially fast. Some of her abilities become outright teleportation; she can rush at an enemy, then in a burst of shadow, simply appear behind them. Her reflexes also become superhuman. She also can do some Electric-type attacks, too, largely channeled through her weapons.
Rose's final evolution doesn't change her much, outwardly. However, Rose stops bleeding in a normal way; if cut, she leaks an inky black smoke, and sometimes she makes shadows deepen and darken if she gets really upset. This freaks her the hell out when it happens. Her abilities improve along the same line; she can move incredibly fast and teleport. She can also do some Fire-type abilities, in addition to her existing attacks.
Finally, Rose's Enlightened ability is Master of Trading. She is a really good merchant, after all.
Starter Pokémon: Rose has a Torchic named Efreet, which she has had -- and bonded with -- since she was little. The former leader of the Windriders gave her Efreet.
Notes/Special Considerations: Rose has the Spearowfeathers. They consist of about a half-dozen non-Enlightened ex-soldiers turned merchants. Rose has to do the heavy lifting on investigating and fighting; they're an asset for occasional information gathering and making money, not something that can do her work for her. Their main use will be occasionally hawking Rose's (sometimes ill-advised) merchandising ideas.
Also: she's still scared of Ghost-types.
SAMPLES
If desired, you may answer some of the following questions in lieu of samples. The questions must be answered in-character, as if they are being asked by a teacher, mentor, or superior. If your character is lying in their answer, please identify it as a lie. The purpose of these is to get an idea of how you will play your character in lieu of the other sample options. 4 questions answered can be used as a substitute for a first-person sample, and 6 questions answered can be used as a substitute for a third-person sample. Both samples may be replaced in this manner. If the character doesn't say enough in their answer, we may request a few more answers for an acceptable sample.
1) What do you feel your role in your city is?
"Every city needs people to protect them. Sometimes, that means holding back Gigas's armies and wild Pokemon. But sometimes... it's dangerous people, who work in secret, and we still have to do something about it. Protecting Caldera -- and its allies -- from those kinds of threats is my job."
2) To what lengths would you go to rescue your allies if they were lost in the wilderness?
"We never leave someone behind if we can help it! You should always try to bring them home. But... you don't throw your life away, either. They wouldn't want you to die for their sake, if they're part of your team."
3) What does the story of the Savior mean to you?
"Hey, it's a nice story! I wouldn't even call it naive. But... it only fits some kind of people. Some people aren't all innocent. They'll try to hurt people, no matter whether they're good or bad. A message like the Savior's won't reach them."
4) What aspects and traits do you respect most in your individual fellow man?
"Someone who's reliable is nice! Someone that you know you can count on. But... I also like people who aren't disillusioned with how things are. Innocent. And hopeful, too, maybe."
5) What do you look for in the Pokémon with whom you bond?
"I wanna know that I can work okay with them. We could get in some really tough situations together. We've gotta be able to rely on each other, especially if it's just us and we're fighting people. We also need to want the same things. We need to be okay with who we are."
6) The gods of old have returned. How would you be judged if you were chosen as a representative of humanity?
"...I've hurt a lot of people. It's always been for the right reasons. I bet we can find a better representative, though."
7) A human has attacked a wild Pokémon who retaliates in defense. How do you respond and whom do you defend?
"The wild Pokemon's the one who was attacked. The human who did it just got exactly what they were asking for. It was cruel, and cruelty comes with a price. If it came down to it, I'd defend the wild Pokemon. Someone who'd do that... they could do other things, too."
(a pause)
"They also need to be tasty if I'm in a pinc--HEY! What's with that look! I'm kidding! Jeez, tough crowd..."
8) What would you say is your greatest duty, and why?
"Stopping Caldera's enemies and keeping the world safe... by stopping the kinds of people who can't live in a better world. Whatever it takes!"
9) What strengths make you most qualified for your role within your city?
"I'm quick on my feet and with my head! I'm also quiet. And... I know when to hold back. But, I'm also a good merchant. I know how to make an awesome product and sell it to the loving masses, and that's no joke!"
10) In your eyes, what is absolutely unforgivable?
"I... can't forgive someone who hurts innocents. Someone who makes innocent people do things they shouldn't, just to protect themselves and the people they care about. I can't forgive that."
